Kathy Klopfenstein, MD
"Dr. Kathy" was born and raised on a family farm in Ohio. She graduated from Wright State University in Fairborn, Ohio with a degree in Biology. Subsequently, she moved to Arizona where she workd as a Medical Technologist for several years before returning to college. She attended Pharmacy school at the University of Arizona in Tucson before switching to the College of Medicine. She graduated from the College of Medicine and then completed a 3 year residency in Pediatrics at Phoenix Children's Hospital. Returning to Ohio, she did a 3 year Fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. She is Board Certified in both General Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.
After completing her training, she accepted a position at Nationwide Children's Hospital were she worked for 13 years. There she praticed Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant. She also was the Director of the Children's Hospice and the Director of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellowship at Nationwide Children's. She also worked part-time in the International Adoption Clinic. She relocated to Johnson City, TN in 2006 to work at the St. Jude affliate clinic located at Johnson City Medical Center. She became the Director of this clinic in 2009. As a physician in the St. Jude affiliate clinic, she worked closely with the physicians at St. Jude's Research Hospital to provide quality care to children with cancer closer to their homes. She also worked in the Residency Continuity clinic practicing General Pediatrics. At both positions, Dr. Kathy was involved in the education of Medical Students, Pediatric residents and fellows. She retired from Pediatric Hematology/Oncology in October 2017.
Dr. Kathy also adopted 3 children internationally: one from Paraguay, one from Russia and one from Guatemala. All three girls are now grown and living on their own. Dr. Kathy enjoys living in her cabin in Mountain City, TN. She has long walks with her 2 dogs and loves quilting.
